Remington Adult Volunteer: Anne Graham

Why do I volunteer?

There are many reasons I like to volunteer. I enjoy being part of team. I find it to be very rewarding. I love meeting new people. Spending time giving back is a fulfilling experience. I wasn’t ready to retire and needed to fill my days. This experience has been better than any job I have been paid to do my entire life.

Why do you volunteer with YMCA specifically?

I like to feel like I am involved in the community which I am a part of and it gives me a purpose. I appreciate all the core values at the YMCA as they are in line with my beliefs. This YMCA is close to home and as I do not drive it seemed to be the perfect fit for me.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?

My favorite part of volunteering is the children. When I get in the door some of the children run to me with a toy in their hands and my heart goes BOOM! BOOM! When they fall asleep in my arms I feel content. If I could change one thing, it would be to have more arms to hold more children. I think they keep me young at heart and also in shape as I love to play on the floor with them. They bring so much joy to my life. I always leave with a smile on my face and a spring in my step.

What is your YMCA story? What brought you here?

About two years ago I was a guest with a friend at the Shawnessy YMCA for several exercise classes. It was there that I learned so much about the core values and benefits of the YMCA. I live in Douglas Glen and I walk in the neighborhood often during the spring/summer months. I was elated to find the construction of the YMCA so close to home. I would walk there just to look at the progress of construction and wonder if I would be able to volunteer my time in some capacity at the beautiful new facility.
