Shawnessy Youth Volunteer: Jared Folett

Why do you volunteer?

I believe volunteerism is an important way for all individuals to use their individual strengths to give back to the community. Using my personal skill set and experience to help the local youth grow into strong individuals through physical education is an incredible experience. Seeing kids improve in their activity or sport is rewarding and all the reason one should volunteer.

Why do you volunteer with the YMCA specifically?

The YMCA is a great organization focused on healthy community development which creates a safe environment for everyone. I believe that kids need a place outside their school and home life to be able to socialize and explore themselves through physical activity and sports. This belief I feel is in the hearts of all volunteers and employees at the YMCA. And this collective belief is why I chose to volunteer at the YMCA.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?

The most rewarding thing from volunteering at the YMCA is helping the kids improve and gain confidence while having fun. Coming up on my fourth year of volunteering at the Shawnessy branch I have gained teaching experience. This had increased my confidence and will help me in my future my endeavors.

What is your YMCA story? What brought you here?

I started volunteering at the YMCA to help me in my tenth grade leadership program. My journey at the Shawnessy YMCA began in 2002 when I was four years old. I participated in rock climbing, swimming and gym programs throughout my childhood. It was only natural to take a leadership role following after the countless people who helped me in my youth.
